Salt
Shakers and Lamp stands
Read: Matt
5:13-16
What would you
think if you went to put salt on your French fries and when
you took a bite they were bland and tasteless? You expected the salt to add
flavor to the
fries, but instead they just tasted like potatoes. This is the point
of the
first part of this passage. When salt loses it flavor it is almost worthless.
This is what happens when your faith is not alive and you are not sharing.
Next, have you
ever gone into a room and the lights go off? It is dark and hard
to see usually. Someone gives you a
candle and now the room is filled with light.
You set the candle down, but you
cover it with a bowl. What happens to the light?
It goes off and you are in the dark. The same is true when
you try to hide your
faith. No one can see Jesus in your life.
So what is the
point? If you do not keep your faith fresh it will lose it's effect on
the
world, just like salt can lose it's flavor. Also if you hide your faith it will
be
like having a light in a dark room and having it covered up. No one can see,
so what is the value of the light.
We need to keep
our faith fresh and not cover it up. The idea is to share it.
